HARARE – The Government of Zimbabwe’s commitment to world-class infrastructure reached another critical milestone with the official opening of the rehabilitated Lorraine Drive to traffic.
The commissioning ceremony, held at the Westgate Traffic Circle on Monday, underscores the Second Republic’s unwavering dedication to modernizing urban road networks and enhancing connectivity within the capital.
The event was presided over by the Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development, Hon. Felix Mhona.
He was joined by the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Harare Metropolitan Province, Hon. Charles Tawengwa, alongside senior government officials and key stakeholders in the transport sector.
In his address, Minister Mhona emphasized that the major facelift of Lorraine Drive is a strategic component of the government’s broader vision to integrate urban infrastructure with major regional trade corridors.
“The completion of this road brings urban infrastructure in line with the high standards we have applied to our major highways, such as the Harare-Beitbridge Road,” said Minister Mhona.
“This project is not just about asphalt; it is about easing traffic congestion, improving safety for motorists, and ensuring seamless mobility in one of Harare’s busiest western corridors.”
The upgraded thoroughfare is expected to significantly enhance the commuting experience, reduce travel time, and stimulate economic activity along the artery.
National Road Programme Progressing at Pace
Beyond the capital, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development reported significant progress on a host of other transformative road projects across the country, reaffirming the government’s commitment to driving socio-economic growth through improved connectivity.
Masvingo Province: Reconstruction efforts are gaining momentum along the Chivhu–Gutu Road. Plant, vehicles, and equipment have been mobilized for the rehabilitation of the Runyowa area stretch, covering the critical Sandton to Gutu section.
This project is vital for connecting rural communities to major growth centers.
Mashonaland East Province: In a boost for local farmers and businesses, priming works are well underway on the Murewa-Madicheche Road construction project.
This route is expected to unlock significant economic potential in the district by improving accessibility.
Mutoko District: Further east, the transformation of the Nhakiwa-Manyika-Muswe-Nyadire-Mutoko Road is progressing rapidly, with asphalt laying currently in progress.
Once complete, this development will revolutionize travel conditions, facilitating the efficient movement of people, agricultural produce, and goods between surrounding communities and markets.
The Second Republic continues to prioritize road rehabilitation and construction as a cornerstone of its infrastructure development agenda, laying the foundation for enhanced trade, improved quality of life, and accelerated economic prosperity for all Zimbabweans.
