In a sobering reminder of the dangers that lurk in seemingly safe communities, a 33-year-old married woman from Ruvimbo Phase 1 in Chinhoyi shared her harrowing story in court this week.
Her ordeal culminated in the sentencing of 36-year-old Felix Mumba, who was found guilty of rape and will serve 16 years behind bars.
The incident unfolded on July 16, 2023, when the victim was on her way to report a minor incident at the Charlie Base Police Post in Chikonohono.
As she navigated the streets, she encountered Mumba, who made unwelcome romantic advances. The victim firmly rejected Mumba’s propositions, citing her commitment to her husband.
Undeterred, Mumba escalated the situation, reportedly attempting to coax the woman into a transactional encounter for money. Again, she turned him down, demonstrating remarkable strength in the face of pressure.
Determined to assert his will, Mumba resorted to threats, ultimately dragging the victim to his living quarters.
The court heard verifiable details of the traumatic events that followed—events that would leave an indelible mark on the victim’s psyche.
Following a complete trial, where Mumba maintained his innocence, the court found him guilty, leading to his sentencing.
In an unexpected turn, the presiding magistrate conditionally suspended two years of the sentence, resulting in an effective 16-year imprisonment for Mumba.
This case has sparked conversations about women’s safety in the community, with local activists calling for increased awareness and protective measures.
