A security guard at Tebekwe Mine in Shurugwi died following an attack by an illegal miner on Friday night. The assailant had trespassed onto the mine’s claim via an underground tunnel.
Police confirmed the incident and the arrest of two suspects—Munyaradzi Gonye and Clever Magura—after mine security fired warning shots during the altercation.
The victim was identified as Tirivanhu Muradzikwa.
Tebekwe Mine Chief Security Officer Derick Dube reported that collaboration with police is underway to capture additional suspects still at large. It is believed some may remain underground after their escape routes were blocked.
“We fired warning shots, which forced them to retreat, and we arrested two,” said Dube.
“We suspect three others are still inside the mine. The site is large and multi-leveled, which complicates the search, but we have sealed all illegal exits.”
Dube noted that security officers are following leads in Shurugwi, referencing a prior arrest of a well-known illegal miner nicknamed “Jamba.”
Amid these security challenges, Tebekwe Mine has engaged in community empowerment by ceding some mining claims to women, youth, and veterans.
The company is also maintaining its festive season philanthropy in Zvishavane, Shurugwi, and Gweru.
