ZINARA Chief Executive Officer Mr. Nkosinathi Ncube has hailed Delta Corporation’s long-running Driver of the Year Competition as a leading example of how corporate initiatives can significantly improve road safety and reduce accidents across Zimbabwe.
Speaking at the 2025 edition of the competition in Harare on Friday, Mr. Ncube said the programme — which dates back to 1990 — had proven to be one of the country’s most successful private-sector road safety interventions.
“This event is more than a competition; it is a celebration of excellence, responsibility and commitment to safety on our roads,” he said.
“It is commendable to see organisations invest beyond basic compliance to practices that set new standards for the industry.”
The programme, which now includes the Forklift Truck Operators Competition, focuses on improving defensive driving, developing safer work habits, and boosting driver morale through professional recognition.
According to Mr Ncube, the competition has yielded measurable results over the years, contributing to fewer road accidents and safer logistics operations within Delta’s vast distribution system.
“Drivers who go through this programme become safety ambassadors in their workplaces and in their communities.
“This initiative directly supports national targets on road safety, occupational health and sustainable transport infrastructure,” he said.
He added that partnerships with the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe, the Ministry of Transport and the Zimbabwe Republic Police had strengthened the programme’s impact, making it a model for public–private cooperation in road safety.
As Delta considers expanding the competition to include light-motor vehicle drivers, Mr Ncube said the initiative would continue to build a safety-conscious workforce aligned with the country’s broader development goals.
“We applaud Delta for its commitment to road safety, professionalism and driver upskilling. This programme remains highly commendable,” he said.
