Tourism Contributed 15% to Zimbabwe’s GDP in 2024 – Mnangagwa

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has highlighted tourism as a critical pillar of Zimbabwe’s economic growth, revealing that the sector contributed 15% to the country’s GDP in 2024.
Speaking at the official opening of the 18th edition of the Sanganai/Hlanganani/Kumbanayi World Tourism Expo in Mutare, the President praised tourism’s growing role in job creation, community empowerment, and local enterprise development.
“Tourism in Zimbabwe drives economic growth, fosters local enterprise development, empowers communities and promotes conservation efforts,” he said.
The President pointed to a surge in global demand for authentic travel experiences, which Zimbabwe is well-positioned to provide, thanks to its rich mix of natural beauty, wildlife, cultural heritage, and rural adventure trails.
He emphasised the importance of rural, community-based, and eco-tourism in spreading the benefits of the sector beyond urban centres.
“We are creating pathways for sustainable economic inclusion by ensuring that local communities benefit directly from tourist spending while preserving our cultural and natural heritage,” he said.
Mnangagwa also urged stakeholders to focus on converting tourism opportunities into tangible benefits for Zimbabweans, in line with national development goals.
The government’s broader tourism strategy includes infrastructure investment, marketing campaigns, and strengthening ties with international travel markets.
