Banket – It was rhythm, tradition, and raw talent on full display as the Katawa Traditional Dance Group from Zvimba North danced their way into the spotlight, clinching the top spot at the Chibuku Neshamwari Mashonaland West provincial finals in an unforgettable cultural showdown.
With pounding drums and heart-thumping energy, the group’s electrifying Mhande dance performance wowed judges and fans alike, earning them the coveted ticket to the national finals in Bulawayo.
Katawa outshone the intense competition, beating Zhandu Kunyandu’s Dinhe dance group and Rimuka Stars’ Zambia Nyau who finished second and third, respectively.
Ten traditional dance groups from across Mashonaland West brought the heat to the stage, showcasing iconic Zimbabwean dances including Muchongoyo, Mbakumba, Nyau, and more. The event turned into a celebration of heritage, storytelling, and rhythm – Zimbabwean style.
“Our mission goes beyond dance,” said Tatenda Tagarira, a proud member of the Katawa crew. “We came together to fight drug abuse in our communities and resist cultural erosion. This win is a celebration of who we are and where we come from.”
Backed by Delta Beverages, the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ), and the Zimbabwe National Traditional Dancers Association, the Chibuku Neshamwari Festival is more than just a stage – it’s a cultural movement.
“We closed Culture Month with a bang!” said Ms Lerato Ndlovu, acting provincial arts manager for NACZ. “Ten groups, ten styles, one united celebration of Zimbabwean identity.”
Mrs. Nyadzisai Mirisawu of the Zimbabwe National Traditional Dancers Association echoed that sentiment, adding, “This is not just a competition. It’s a living archive of our heritage. Through dance, we protect and pass on our cultural spirit.”
With past rounds already heating up in Manicaland, Midlands, and now Mash West, the national finals promise to be a spectacle like no other. And with Katawa Traditional Dance Group leading the Mash West charge, all eyes are now on Bulawayo.
