Kariba – Liberation War Hero and long-time ZANU PF member Nyashani Chirumezani was laid to rest on Friday at Gatchegatche Fishing Camp, Kariba.
He passed away at the age of 64 in Zambia’s Mutenderi Hospital after a prolonged illness.
A large crowd gathered to pay tribute, including fellow war veterans, family members, and community leaders—an indication of Chirumezani’s lasting impact on both his community and the nation.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa posthumously conferred the Liberation War Hero status on Chirumezani, following appeals from the War Veterans Association and ZANU PF leaders in Mashonaland West.
Speaking on behalf of the Mashonaland West Provincial Minister of State and Devolution Affairs, Kariba District Development Coordinator Desmond A. Gumbochuma praised Chirumezani’s service:
“Today, we celebrate a life dedicated to the liberation of our nation.”
Chirumezani’s niece, Nomore Gonye, expressed the family’s gratitude for the national recognition:
“We deeply appreciate the honor bestowed upon him.”
ZANU PF provincial chairperson Mary Mliswa, represented by transport secretary Gilbert Chibayamagora, commended Chirumezani’s integrity and principles.
“He was a man who shunned corruption and abuse of power—straightforward and committed throughout his life,” said Chibayamagora.
Chirumezani is survived by his wife and three children. As mourners paid their final respects, the legacy he leaves behind—rooted in integrity, sacrifice, and national service—was deeply felt.
His passing marks the end of a chapter, but his memory will continue to inspire those who follow in his footsteps.
