An estimated harvest of between 35000 to 40000 tonnes of Barley is expected this year by Perceval Mazike, a local farmer who is under Delta Corporation contract scheme.
The bumper harvest will be realized from the 400 hectares which Mazike put under irrigation up from last year’s 20 hectares.
This will go a long way in providing Delta Corporation which focuses on the three main crops under the contract scheme which includes sorghum, maize and barley.
Speaking at a Barley Field Day held Friday at the farm, Mazike said the success of the crop this year was largely due to the farming inputs as well as huge financial investment by Delta Corporation which provides seeds, chemicals and in some cases farm implements such as pivots and state-of-the art tractors.
Guests also marveled at the thriving barley crop before they toured the water supply from Mupfure River.
Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Anxious Masuku who was the guest commended Mazike for the sterling work and said it was about time farmers taking farming as a job.
Delta Corporation chief executive Matts Valela said the company was the biggest land bank in the country.
However, Valela called on authorities to curb price distortions of cereal such as barley.
