Kariba — What began as an ordinary Sunday afternoon in Nyamhunga 2 ended in unimaginable heartbreak, as a young mother’s life was forever changed by the sudden and tragic loss of her ten-month-old son, Harvey Nyamatendedza.
Between noon and 12:30 PM, while Harvey’s mother briefly stepped into the house to prepare lunch, the toddler — just beginning to crawl and explore the world around him — somehow ended up headfirst in a 20-liter bucket of water outside. By the time she returned, the unimaginable had happened.
Neighbors rushed to the scene in a desperate attempt to save the baby’s life, performing emergency measures before transporting him to Nyamhunga Clinic.
He was quickly transferred to Kariba District Hospital — but it was too late. Harvey was pronounced dead on arrival.
Ward 2 Councillor Chikopa, who visited the grieving family, confirmed there were no signs of foul play and urged parents to remain vigilant. “It only takes a second for a tragedy like this to unfold,” he said solemnly.
Harvey’s death has sent shockwaves through the close-knit Kariba community and has reignited national concern over child safety.
In recent months, similar incidents involving young children left unattended have been reported across Zimbabwe, sparking calls for community awareness campaigns.
“This is a tragic reminder of how quickly things can go wrong,” said Talent Seremwe, a local resident. “We need to be more vigilant and ensure our children are never left unattended, especially around water.”
Another resident, Trace Phiri, called for broader action. “It’s heartbreaking. We need community programs that educate parents on child safety. Accidents like these are preventable.”
As the Nyamatendedza family grapples with the devastating loss, many in Kariba are rallying around them — offering support, prayers, and comfort.
Harvey’s short life has left a deep mark on the hearts of many, serving as a painful reminder of the vulnerability of children and the urgent need for proactive safety measures at home.
