Ntabazinduna — In a bold move towards self-sufficiency and economic development, the government has called on officers of the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) to actively participate in income-generating initiatives within their facilities.
This directive was highlighted at the graduation ceremony for 615 officers at the Ntabazinduna Training School on Tuesday.
The newly graduated officers completed various professional development courses, including Stores and Supervisory Management, Security and Intelligence, and Tactical Operations.
Their education marks a significant step towards enhancing their effectiveness in their roles and contributing meaningfully to the nation.
One graduate, hailing from the marginalized Mola community in Kariba, expressed gratitude for the government’s inclusivity policy.
“I am proud to be part of an initiative that ensures all communities are involved in national development,” he said.
“Completing my management course will not only boost my personal growth but also improve our organization’s resource management capabilities.”
The ceremony’s Guest of Honour, ZPCS Commissioner General Moses Chihobvu, emphasized the need for innovation and entrepreneurship within the ZPCS.
“While our primary roles involve incarceration, rehabilitation, and reintegration, we must adapt and prioritize productivity and innovation as part of our evolving mandate,” he stated.
Dr. Chihobvu urged the graduates to engage in projects that will foster economic growth and institutional independence, echoing the national mantra, “Nyika inovakwa nevene vayo, Ilizwe lakhiwa ngabanikazi balo” — meaning “The country is built by its owners.”
The Second Republic remains committed to empowering civil servants through various benefits, including education and training, to help achieve the ambitious Vision 2030 goals.
As the ZPCS evolves, the emphasis on entrepreneurship reflects a strategic shift towards a more proactive role in the nation’s economic landscape.
With this new direction, the ZPCS aims not only to fulfill its core functions but also to contribute significantly to Zimbabwe’s broader economic ambitions, encouraging officers to be catalysts of change within their communities.
