Kariba — ZPC Kariba’s hopes of a triumphant homecoming were dashed as they played to a 1-1 draw against MWOS FC on Saturday, marking yet another setback after their recent loss to Chicken Inn.
The match, held at the ZPC Kariba Stadium, showcased both teams’ determination but ultimately left the home side searching for answers.
The game kicked off with early excitement as ZPC Kariba‘s Munashe Kamwendo found the back of the net in the 7th minute, courtesy of a neat assist from Fanuel Shoko. The home crowd erupted in celebration, igniting hopes for a decisive victory.
However, the joy was short-lived as MWOS FC quickly settled into the game, creating several opportunities to equalize.
ZPC Kariba’s defense appeared shaky, particularly in the absence of their key center back, Boid Mutukure, who is reportedly set to join Manica Diamonds.
This defensive instability was exploited by MWOS FC‘s Billy Veremu, who relentlessly pressured the home defense. Despite ZPC’s attempts to build on their lead, Charles Munyanyi found himself thwarted by the agile Tafadzwa Nyabunze, leaving the home side frustrated.
As the match progressed, MWOS FC began to gain momentum. Their persistence paid off just before halftime when Aboubakar Moffat scored a crucial equalizer in the 45th minute, sending the teams into the break at 1-1.
The second half saw both teams push for a winner, but opportunities were squandered on both sides. ZPC Kariba’s goalkeeper, Tatenda Munditi, made several key saves to keep his team in the game, while MWOS FC’s Malvern Takunda Mudzuka missed a golden opportunity with a wayward volley.
After the final whistle, the atmosphere was mixed. MWOS FC‘s head coach, Lloyd Mutasa, expressed satisfaction with the result, stating, “It’s never easy to get three points away from home, so a point is a positive outcome for us.”
Contrastingly, ZPC Kariba’s coach, Newton Chitewe, reflected on the missed chances, saying, “It was a good game overall. We both had our moments, but it’s a point gained or two points dropped. Given our home advantage, I believe we could have done better.”
As ZPC Kariba looks to regroup, the team must address their defensive vulnerabilities and strive for more consistency in their upcoming fixtures.
