Harare, Zimbabwe — Zimbabwe has taken a bold step towards a tech-driven future with the unveiling of its Smart Zimbabwe 2030 Vision, aimed at leveraging digital transformation to drive economic growth and improve quality of life.
Speaking at the inaugural Smart Zimbabwe Conference and Expo, ICT, Postal, and Courier Services Minister Dr Tatenda Mavetera highlighted the government’s commitment to a digital agenda that will propel the country toward modernisation by 2030.
In her address, Dr Mavetera credited President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s leadership for steering the nation toward this ambitious goal, which focuses on harnessing Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to build a connected, competitive, and resilient Zimbabwe.
“ICT is not merely a tool; it is the backbone of Smart Zimbabwe, the foundation that will empower every individual, business, and community,” she said.
Key Pillars of Smart Zimbabwe 2030
The Smart Zimbabwe 2030 Vision is built on several core pillars, each focused on transforming key sectors through ICT:
- Smart Cities – Through IoT sensors and smart grids, Zimbabwe’s cities aim to optimize resources, improve public safety, and enhance sustainability.
- Smart Transport – Leveraging ICT for real-time traffic management and automated ticketing to create safer and more efficient transit systems.
- Smart Agriculture – Using data-driven tools like precision farming and satellite imagery to boost food security and support economic growth in agriculture.
- Smart Mining – Enhancing productivity and safety in the mining sector through technologies such as remote monitoring and autonomous equipment.
- Smart Tourism – Digital marketing and virtual experiences will expand Zimbabwe’s appeal to international tourists.
- Smart Health – Telemedicine and electronic health records will improve accessibility to healthcare and patient outcomes across the nation.
- Smart Trade and Commerce – E-commerce platforms and digital payment systems will empower small businesses and open new markets.
- Smart Government – E-governance initiatives will streamline public services, making government more transparent and accessible.
- Smart Education – E-learning platforms and digital literacy programs aim to provide equitable access to quality education and prepare citizens for a tech-centric world.
Infrastructure and Policy Developments
Dr Mavetera underscored the importance of connectivity as a cornerstone of this vision. The government is expanding broadband, 5G, and satellite internet access across the country to ensure that all Zimbabweans have access to quality connectivity.
Additionally, the government is working to make smart devices more affordable and accessible to all citizens, recognizing that connectivity without affordable devices limits progress.
To support this digital future, Zimbabwe is investing in local data centers and private cloud infrastructure to securely host national data.
The government is also developing critical policies, including an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy Framework and a National Cybersecurity Policy, to ensure safe and responsible use of technology.
A Call for Unity and Collaboration
Dr Mavetera emphasized that achieving the Smart Zimbabwe 2030 Vision will require collaboration across sectors.
“The journey to a Smart Zimbabwe is not for the government alone; it requires the support of the private sector, communities, and every citizen,” she said.
The Smart Zimbabwe Conference and Expo serves as a platform to foster these partnerships, with participants from across industries gathering to explore how ICT can drive economic growth and improve lives.
As Zimbabwe embarks on its journey to become a smart nation, the 2030 Vision stands as a roadmap for digital transformation, promising a future that is connected, inclusive, and innovative.
