Harare – Zimbabwe will host the 58th Annual Conference of the International Committee for Museums and Collections of Modern Art (CIMAM) in 2026, marking the first time the prestigious global museum network convenes on African soil.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Anselem Nhamo Sanyatwe, during the inaugural meeting with the newly appointed National Gallery of Zimbabwe Board.
CIMAM brings together directors and curators from leading modern and contemporary art museums around the world.
The 2026 conference is expected to attract influential cultural leaders, art scholars, and museum professionals, placing Zimbabwe at the centre of global artistic discourse.
Minister Sanyatwe described the event as a “momentous milestone” not only for Zimbabwe but for the African continent, saying it signals growing recognition of Africa’s role in shaping global museum practice and contemporary art narratives.
He said hosting the conference positions Zimbabwe as a cultural hub and strengthens its international standing in line with the Second Republic’s engagement and re-engagement policy.
Beyond cultural prestige, the conference is also expected to stimulate tourism and foster long-term partnerships across creative industries.
Hotels, travel operators and the broader hospitality sector are likely to benefit from the influx of international delegates.
The National Gallery of Zimbabwe will spearhead preparations, with the Minister urging the new Board to “hit the ground running” to ensure the event’s success.
