UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, Mr Edward Kallon on Tuesday emphasized the transformative potential of migration in fostering sustainable development across Africa.
Addressing ministers, diplomats, and international representatives, including Ms. Amy E. Pope, Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Mr Kallon emphasised the need to prioritize safe and legal migration pathways under this year’s theme, “Every Step – Facilitating Regular Migration Pathways.”
Zimbabwe, he noted, plays a crucial role as a source, transit hub, and destination for migrants. While economic instability, climate change, and irregular migration present challenges, migration offers significant opportunities, particularly through remittances, which support families and drive local economies.
“Migration enhances cultural diversity and addresses labor shortages, making it integral to economic development,” Mr Kallon remarked.
He stressed the importance of a unified regional response, urging Zimbabwe, as the current SADC Chair, to lead efforts to harmonize policies under the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA).
This includes aligning immigration laws, protecting migrants’ rights, and promoting safe and orderly migration.
Mr Kallon outlined Key priorities including improving data collection to inform policy, addressing human trafficking, and expanding regular migration pathways.
He also highlighted the need to support Zimbabwean migrants, particularly those affected by South Africa’s expiring special permits, and advocated for capacity building to match labor market needs across the region.
“Let us renew our commitment to fostering inclusive societies that honor migrants’ invaluable contributions,” said Mr Kallon.
He emphasised the role of partnerships among governments, civil society, and international organizations in turning migration challenges into shared prosperity.
The event underscored Zimbabwe’s unique position to shape migration as a cornerstone of Africa’s development narrative, transforming it from a challenge into an opportunity.
