Victoria Falls —The future of Africa’s postal and logistics industry lies in harnessing cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence, blockchain, and robotics, according to Dr Gift Machengete, Director General of the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (Potraz).
In a speech read on his behalf by POTRAZ Deputy Director General Mr Alfred Marisa at the African Postal Regulators’ Conference and the second meeting of the CRASA Postal Committee, Dr. Machengete painted a vision of a high-tech transformation reshaping the sector across the continent.
“We are at the cusp of a revolution,” Dr Machengete said, “where technology doesn’t just complement the postal sector but becomes its backbone.”
He highlighted innovations such as autonomous delivery robots, AI-powered drones, and blockchain-enabled systems that enhance transparency and efficiency in postal services worldwide.
Technology Driving Change
Robotics, Dr. Machengete noted, is already streamlining operations in sorting centers globally, with machines capable of handling hundreds of thousands of items daily. Countries like Switzerland and Japan have adopted robotic postal workers to improve efficiency and accuracy, while AI-driven drones are reaching disaster-hit or remote areas with emergency supplies.
Singapore Post, he added, is pioneering the use of drones for last-mile delivery in congested urban areas. These technologies not only optimize delivery but also redefine regulatory frameworks for postal services in the digital age.
A Collaborative Path Forward
Dr. Machengete emphasized the importance of collaboration among African stakeholders. Welcoming delegates from PAPU, CRASA, and OECD, he called for a unified approach to modernizing the sector and addressing regulatory challenges.
“This conference is timely as we explore emerging postal industry trends and regulatory techniques in the digital age,” he said. Discussions will center on digitalization, environmental sustainability, courier licensing, and disaster risk management, with the aim of ensuring Africa’s postal sector remains competitive and inclusive.
Zimbabwe at the Forefront
Hosting the conference reflects Zimbabwe’s commitment to driving innovation in the postal industry, Dr. Machengete noted. The country aims to foster collaboration across Africa while ensuring the sector adapts to evolving consumer needs and technological advancements.
As the week of deliberations unfolds in Victoria Falls, the focus remains on crafting strategies for a resilient, modernized, and sustainable postal sector capable of serving Africa’s dynamic markets and communities.
