Zimbabwe’s commitment to providing a safe, welcoming, and memorable experience for visitors was reaffirmed following a recent incident involving a tourist who shared a video online describing an unpleasant encounter with police while travelling in the country.

The tourist, who was part of a visiting group, recorded and shared their concerns on social media after what they described as unfair treatment during a routine police stop.

The video quickly gained attention, prompting swift engagement from authorities.

In a show of decisive leadership, Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Honourable Barbara Rwodzi, accompanied by Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) Chief Executive Officer George Manyaya, personally reached out to the affected tourist.

During the engagement, Minister Rwodzi apologised for the incident and assured the visitor that corrective action would be taken against any rogue elements whose conduct undermines Zimbabwe’s tourism values.

Minister Rwodzi reiterated Government’s unwavering commitment to protecting tourists and ensuring that Zimbabwe remains a destination of choice.

“The actions of a single officer do not represent who we are as a nation or the warmth of our people,” she emphasised, adding that tourism remains a national priority.

Her prompt response was widely applauded, with many Zimbabweans taking to social media to express support for the Minister and solidarity with the tourist.

The outpouring of goodwill reflected the shared national desire to uphold Zimbabwe’s reputation as a friendly and welcoming destination.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) also issued a statement clarifying the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The police acknowledged that the arrest resulted from a misunderstanding and noted that the officer involved had acted overzealously.

ZRP expressed regret over the incident and reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety, dignity, and well-being of all visitors to Zimbabwe.

“The police force remains dedicated to upholding the law while fostering a welcoming environment for tourists,” the statement read.

In a follow-up video filmed at the scenic Bridal Veil Falls in Chimanimani, the tourist praised Zimbabwe’s leadership and responsiveness.

“Zimbabwe, you’re a beauty,” the tourist said. “I just got off the phone with the Honourable Minister of Tourism Barbara Rwodzi, who apologised profusely and assured us this would not be tolerated. This shows Zimbabwe is serious about tourism.”

The tourist further encouraged fellow travellers to visit Zimbabwe, highlighting the availability of a hotline to report any unfair treatment and stressing that they were not seeking preferential treatment, only fairness.

The incident has since been viewed as a powerful reminder of the importance of responsible tourism and cooperation among all stakeholders, including law enforcement, to maintain a safe and welcoming environment for visitors.

It also underscored the growing role of social media in promoting accountability and strengthening public trust.

Ultimately, the episode has reinforced confidence in Zimbabwe’s tourism sector — demonstrating that concerns are heard, action is taken, and visitors remain valued guests in a country rich in natural beauty, culture, and hospitality.
