Top music promoter and artist manager — Sam Mataure — who was recently in Lusaka, Zambia conducting a master class at Alliance Franciase said he was booked for workshops around the region.

The master classes focus on band and management, music education and tips for sustainability in music industry.

The former manager and drummer for Oliver Mtukudzi told Gem Nation News that his first trip to Zambia was a resounding success.

“The workshop went well that we are planning another soon but I’m booked for another workshop in Malawi soon. I will do some in Zimbabwe once I identify the venues,” Mataure said.

The Lusaka master class was the first in a series of master classes to be conducted by Mataure who is now recovering from a stroke.

The 54-year-old drummer does not need much introduction having worked with big names in music.

From the likes of Chiwoniso Maraire to Andy Brown, Jazz Invitation, Beaulah Dyko, Victor Kunonga and Dr Thomas Mapfumo, from Oliver Mtukudzi to Steve Dyer and Auntie Dot.

He has rubbed shoulders with some of the top musicians in Southern Africa and beyond.

However, the white bearded Mataure says he is on the mend and taking one day at a time.

“What I would need now is perhaps hitting the gym and find someone who can assist with working out. You know with stroke you cannot say when you will be up and running but I am taking one day at a time. And also you cannot rush anything he recovery is a slow process,” he said.

He has already lined up Thomas Mapfumo tribute dinner where artists, promoters and journalists will be invited.

“The idea is to say thank you to Dr Mapfumo while he is still with us. The dinner will include a pre-recorded message from him that’s if he cannot attend. Just like what people do with Bob Marley commemorations the legend isn’t there anymore but people still hold the shows,” he said.

The tribute dinner is slated for 19 February 2022 in Harare and then there is the Chimanimani Arts Festival scheduled for 15 to 17 April 2022.

Both shows are being put together by Mataure.
