SHURUGWI / GWERU — In a moving tribute to Zimbabwe’s liberation war heroes, River Valley Group brought smiles and support to the families of fallen heroes during the Heroes and Defence Forces Day commemorations held on August 11 and 12, 2025.
The commemorations were led by Ambassador Professor Smelly Dube, the Group’s Chief Executive Officer, who presided over the Shurugwi event at the District Heroes Acre, delivering both material support and heartfelt messages of gratitude to families of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for Zimbabwe’s freedom.
A Patriotic Gesture
More than 50 hampers of essential goods were donated to families in Shurugwi, while in Gweru, over 60 widows of fallen heroes received similar support, along with branded t-shirts, caps, and meals as part of the commemorations.
The initiative formed part of the Group’s corporate social responsibility efforts, aligned with President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s Vision 2030, which emphasizes inclusive development under the banner “leaving no one and no place behind.”
“Their sacrifices paved the way for our freedom, and it is our duty to honor their legacy by supporting their families and upholding the values they fought for,” said Ambassador Prof. Dube.
“As a business operating here in Shurugwi—through our housing project and Tebekwe Mine—this is our way of giving back to the community.”
Community and Government Support
The Shurugwi event drew a wide array of dignitaries, including Members of Parliament Hon. Joseph Mpasi and Hon. Wilson Mhuri, local government representatives, war veterans, traditional leaders, and members of the public—all of whom expressed appreciation for the River Valley Group’s gesture.
To further support the commemorations, River Valley donated over 710 litres of fuel to government departments, including the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) and other security services.
This logistical boost was critical for the smooth running of Heroes Day preparations and ongoing operations to uphold law and order.
“We donated fuel to assist the police in their essential duties. As the country confronts challenges like drug and substance abuse, mobility is key to effective crime-fighting,” Prof. Dube added.
The ZRP Shurugwi District received 450 litres, distributed among its departments such as the Minerals and Property sections, to enhance operational efficiency.
A National Day of Tribute
This year’s Heroes and Defence Forces Day was marked by parades, cultural performances, and tributes across the country. River Valley Group’s contribution stood out as a practical expression of remembrance and patriotism.
Ambassador Prof. Dube also thanked the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Hon. Owen Ncube, for facilitating the company’s involvement in the commemorations.
She further expressed appreciation to the Group’s Chairman, Engineer Dr. Mncedisi Dube, and the River Valley staff for their collective effort in organizing and delivering the support.
