POTRAZ, the regulatory authority responsible for ICTs in Zimbabwe is planning on holding basic digital skills workshops throughout the country for people with disabilities.
This was said by POTRAZ Director General Dr Gift Machengete in a speech read on his behalf by Deputy director USF Postal and Courier Services Mr Tichafa Mujuru in Masvingo at the weekend, where 31 visually impaired members participated in basic digital skills training.
The participants were drawn from Masvingo Urban, Masvingo Rural, Zaka, Mwenezi, Gutu, Chiredzi, Chivi and Bikita districts.
“You may also want to know that this program is just one of many interventions that POTRAZ is undertaking to provide ICTs to those with disabilities and it comes after the one we held in Chinhoyi, Mashonaland West Province in June this year,” he said.
“To that end, POTRAZ, as the regulatory authority responsible for ICTs in Zimbabwe, recognizes the critical role that digital skills play in ensuring that our citizens can fully participate in the digital age. With this workshop, we believe we have empowered you with the knowledge and skills necessary to confidently engage with the digital world.”
Since 2016, the Authority has distributed more than 450 ICT gadgets, in the form of computers and other assistive technologies to more than 40 institutions for people with disabilities throughout the country.
Over the years, the Authority has also provided internet connectivity to more than 30 institutions for PWDs.
“As we conclude this workshop, we want to emphasize that your journey does not end here. The digital world is constantly evolving, and we encourage you to continue your learning and exploration.
“Stay curious, be fearless in your pursuit of knowledge, and use your newly acquired skills to make a difference in your personal and professional lives,” Dr Machengete said.
He said disability was not a barrier to learning, adapting, and thriving in the digital age.
Dr Machengete urged participants to stay connected, learning and reach out for assistance.
The special training workshop on Basic Digital Skills was organized by POTRAZ and facilitated by the Internet Society (Zimbabwe Chapter).
