Harare – The Zimbabwe Republic Police has arrested 32 people, including seven directors and 25 employees, for operating an illicit brewery at Arlington Industrial Park in Harare.
The Samna Liquor company allegedly manufactured and distributed four types of beer labeled Jay-Dox vodka, Happy Cheers mint Vodka, Happy Cheers whiskey premium,Jay-Dox brandy.
According to National Police Spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi, “The Zimbabwe Republic Police would like to confirm the arrest of seven directors and 25 employees in Harare.
“The suspects are facing charges of operating a liquor manufacturing plant and distributing illicit brews without following proper procedures and without proper documents.”
The police seized five vehicles used to distribute the products and a stock of illicit liquor worth thousands of dollars. Investigations revealed that the liquor was made from ethanol, flavors, and water, with 40% alcohol content that had not been tested.
Comm Nyathi said, “Further investigations are being conducted, and the suspects will appear in court soon.”
The employees were working without food handling certificates, risking the health of consumers. The company’s operations had raised concerns about public health and safety.
The directors, who are foreigners, were staying at the rented plant premises and had been violating the country’s laws despite acquiring a liquor license from local authorities.
