Teachers in Zimbabwe’s private education sector are uniting to form the Private Education Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PETUZ), a new body aimed at addressing long-standing challenges faced by educators in private schools.
The formation of PETUZ comes amid growing concern over the lack of representation for private school teachers, many of whom operate without standardised contracts, face job insecurity, and receive poor remuneration despite high school fees charged by some institutions.
Unlike existing unions that primarily represent public-sector educators, PETUZ seeks to fill a critical gap by providing private school teachers with a dedicated collective bargaining platform.
The union’s vision is to promote fairness, job security, and professional respect within Zimbabwe’s private education sector.
Although still in its formative stages, PETUZ is expected to have a significant impact. Zimbabwe’s education system continues to grapple with challenges such as teacher shortages, inadequate infrastructure, and persistent economic pressures.
While the country boasts one of the highest literacy rates in Africa, systemic issues continue to undermine the sector’s effectiveness.
The emergence of PETUZ is anticipated to shine a spotlight on these concerns and advocate for meaningful reforms.
Its establishment could also inspire similar movements in other sectors, strengthening collective action and workers’ rights advocacy nationwide.
“We will announce the interim executive in due course as we finalise structures, including the number of districts and provinces to be covered,” saidPETUZ Organising Secretary, Mr Paul Makoni.
