The 10th edition of LET THEM Schools Arts Festival is set for 30 July 2022 at LET THEM Trust Culture Village in Domboshava.
The festival returns after a long lull due to disruption to in-person festivals caused by the pandemic.
Chido Musasiwa-Gutu, the director said the festival will start from 8:30am-5pm under the theme “Tambai”.
“The five art categories to be featured will focus on different subthemes namely: ‘Child Trafficking’ for Drama & Poetry to further bring awareness and action to the global problem; Music acts will have a focus on the late musician Zex Manatsa and participants will be required to include at least 1 song of the late musician in their allotted 10-minute performance as a way to help young people further appreciate the evolution and establishment of Zimbabwe’s music industry by such music legends; and lastly Dance & Visual Art will embody the theme ‘Tambai’.
“To celebrate the occasion of the 10th Edition we will also be having a marathon and carnival styled roadshow. Thus, we will kick off with the carnival roadshow which will lead into the marathon and then the start of the festival acts,” Chido said.
LET THEM Trust is a child-oriented creative, educational and cultural initiative that aims to create platforms for young people to groom and showcase their artistic talent.
Founded in 2010, LET THEM Trust has evolved into a multifaceted cultural and arts promotion and preservation organization.
The festival has previously been held at Harare Polytechnic College, Churchill Boys, Allan Wilson, Zimbabwe Agricultural Showgrounds.
This year’s festival program is as follows:
30 July 2022:
- The festival will be kickstarted with a marathon headed to the culture village. The marathon will feature varying distances which are 5km and 10km. The run will enable more people to appreciate the arts and varying methods of expression by different youth in the nation. As such we invite all distance runners to partake and revel in the occasion.
- As hype for the day builds up from the marathon, we will carry out a carnival styled roadshow to the Culture Village. This will further create excitement and awareness for the festival on the day. This will also serve to educate people of the festival at the Culture Village so the entire community can participate.
The main event, the festival, will feature Theatre, Music, Dance, Visual Art and Poetry. Selected visual art designers will showcase Art pieces, that can either be painted, batik, mixed media or any art form that will be on permanent display. Please note that Theatre is 10 minutes and Poetry is to be 2mins 30secs maximum. Music performances are to be 10 minutes and dance is to be no more than 5minutes.
