Jonah Moyo turns vegan, talks legacy

Devera Ngwena Jazz Band leader —Jonah Moyo — says he is now a vegan and eating healthy as he approaches the twilight of his career.

In an interview  with ZiFM Stereo host Themba Mkanda on his popular weekend show which streams live on social media, the veteran singer does not look his age.

If anything, Jonah Moyo looks agile and younger than his age.

“I have cut down on meat because of my age now. Ndodya mufushwa ndakuwanza ma vegetables nekuti mazera edu aya unozoona wakuita zvinana BP (I am now into vegetables and eating healthy. At my age you are prone to diseases such as BP),” he said.

Jonah Moyo was a big name in music industry so much so that even Dr Oliver Mtukudzi would curtain raise for him.

Like Themba put it: “You can’t write the music history of Zimbabwe and put a full stop without mentioning the significant contribution and role played by this legend.

Jonah Moyo and the Devera Ngwena Jazz Band was a big 80s sensation. Jonah Moyo was so big that the legendary Tuku used to open for him at shows around Zimbabwe.

“So big was Jonah Moyo that he had a wedding that went on for two weeks from Bulawayo all the way to Masvingo and eventually to Gokwe.”

So remarkable was his career that when the group had a fallout with the mining authorities in Mashava, theye decided to go it alone.

“We were involved in an accident on our way from a gig and so the powers that be at the mine refused to compensate us and then we decided to leave,” Jonah Moyo said.

He said their departure from the mine also caused their split as a group.

At the time, he said, Devera Ngwena Jazz Band was made up of five original members.

On his legacy, Jonah Moyo confirmed to Themba that Aaron Chiundura was his brother.

He also confirmed that his three boys Shepherd the first born, Jareth a computer engineer based in Japan and Jonah Jnr, an Actuarial Scientists were musicians in their own right.
