The government is intensifying efforts to boost agricultural productivity and rural industrialisation in Mhondoro Ngezi District, with a strong focus on innovation, technology and value addition at the village level.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development, Professor Obert Jiri, said this during a visit to Blumton Range Farm, owned by Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Lands and Fisheries, Honourable Haritatos.
Professor Jiri said sustainable agricultural growth depends on robust production systems that ensure a steady supply of raw materials for rural agro-industries.
“We must focus on producing all crops and strengthening value addition across villages. ARDA’s mandate is to support rural development by establishing processing plants that utilise locally produced crops,” he said.
The visit centred on ongoing agricultural initiatives and projects aimed at improving productivity through modern farming technologies, data-driven planning and increased farmer support.
Hon Haritatos highlighted the importance of the Crop, Livestock and Fisheries Assessment (CLAFA) programme, noting that two assessments are conducted annually to guide planning and resource allocation.
“We register and train trainers and are now focusing on CLAFA 1 and 2 in April. Currently, we are on CLAFA 1, which is centred on supporting farmers and agronomists on the ground,” he said.
Professor Jiri also said the Ministry is equipping field officers with modern digital tools to enhance data collection, monitoring and record-keeping, a move expected to improve decision-making and food security outcomes.
The delegation included ARDA Chief Executive Officer Mr Mhiko, ARDA Chief Director Ms Meddeline Magwenzi, Director of Rural Development Mr Leonard Munamati, Provincial Director Ms Evelyn Ndoro, and Director of Media Ms Barbara Machekano.
The visit underscores government’s commitment to transforming agriculture into a key driver of rural development, in line with Zimbabwe’s Vision 2030, which prioritises food security, industrialisation and improved livelihoods for rural communities.
