MASVINGO — Sanganai/Hlanganani is no longer just about business-to-business meetings and exhibition stands.
This year, it kicks off with a Sports Tourism Carnival — a bold step towards diversifying Zimbabwe’s tourism offerings and attracting a new type of visitor.
The 19th edition of the Sanganai/Hlanganani Dzimbahwe Tourism Expo will begin with the September Sports Tourism Carnival from September 1 to 4, followed by a Street Carnival on September 5, ahead of the main Expo from September 9 to 12.
A New Tourism Product for Zimbabwe
The inclusion of a Sports Tourism Carnival represents a significant expansion of Zimbabwe’s tourism calendar. Sports tourism is one of the fastest-growing segments of the global tourism industry, and Zimbabwe is positioning itself to capture a share of this lucrative market.
The carnival is expected to showcase various sporting disciplines, creating a platform for athletes and sports enthusiasts while attracting visitors who might not otherwise attend a traditional tourism trade fair.
Building Momentum for the Expo
The sports carnival is designed to build excitement and momentum ahead of the main Expo, extending the event’s duration and creating a more immersive experience for visitors.
For Masvingo, the carnival provides an additional opportunity to showcase its tourism assets, including the iconic Great Zimbabwe Monument, Lake Mutirikwi, and other natural and cultural attractions.
Infrastructure Supporting Sports Tourism
The development of the Gymkhana Tourism Park, which will include a mini-stadium, is expected to support sports tourism activities in the province long after the Expo ends.
The facility positions Masvingo as a potential host for future sporting events and tournaments.
The tourism authorities have emphasised the importance of showcasing Masvingo’s diverse attractions to international markets.
The sports carnival adds a new dimension to the province’s tourism portfolio, complementing its heritage, wildlife, and cultural offerings.
Street Carnival: A Celebration of Culture
Following the Sports Tourism Carnival, the Street Carnival on September 5 will bring the festivities to the heart of Masvingo city, offering residents and visitors a vibrant celebration of local culture, music, and cuisine.
The street carnival is expected to engage the broader community, ensuring that the benefits of hosting Sanganai extend beyond the Expo venue to local businesses, vendors, and residents.
