Kariba – In a groundbreaking initiative, the University of Zimbabwe, in partnership with the Municipality of Kariba, has launched a project to enhance the town’s water and sewage distribution systems through the innovative use of drone technology.
This initiative, which commenced on Tuesday and will continue through Saturday, aims to create a Web-GIS-based dashboard for real-time monitoring of critical infrastructure.
The project represents a significant leap forward for water management in Kariba, allowing for immediate tracking of leaks, blockages, and other system inefficiencies.
The ability to visualize these issues in real time is expected to streamline maintenance efforts and improve overall service delivery to residents.
“This initiative not only showcases the capabilities of modern technology but also emphasizes the importance of collaboration between local authorities and academic institutions,” said a spokesperson from the Municipality of Kariba.
“The data collected will empower us to make informed decisions regarding our water and sanitation services.”
The use of drones is a pivotal component of this project. All operations are being conducted by a licensed team from the University of Zimbabwe, adhering to strict aviation and privacy regulations to ensure community safety.
As drones fly over various neighborhoods, residents are encouraged to remain calm and recognize the positive impact of this technological advancement.
The municipality highlighted that the project is a direct response to the growing need for efficient water management solutions, particularly in light of climate change and increasing urbanization.
By integrating advanced technology into their infrastructure management, Kariba aims to set a benchmark for other municipalities.
