Talented actress Chido Jo-Anne Tenga will feature in new Theatre in the Park one woman hander titled Molly Street.
The play will run from 18 to 20 September 2024 starting at 6pm.
Written and directed by renowned Peter Churu and sound by Patrick Tembo, Molly Street
is about a crime of passion set in early 1960 in the sugar plantation town of Chiredzi.
Molly finds a tragic end when murdered by a jealous boyfriend. At that point the supernatural meets the natural as Molly’s spirit comes back to seek revenge for her death.
In an inspired and ground breaking move, the local town authority names a street in her honour.
This story visits issues to do with early child marriages, women’s rights to work, definition of prostitution as work and deficiencies in pre-colonial Zimbabwe.
According to Churu said Molly’s story would resonate with many Zimbabweans.
“The full house during our performance at Jasen Mphepo Little Theatre was testimony to that. We were humbled by the standing ovation at the end and are encouraged by the huge demand for more performances. That is why we have planned for 18, 19 and 20 September performances at Theatre in the Park,” Churu said.
Chido said about the play: “I am very excited to be telling a lot of stories from one woman’s experience.”
Chido has been a theater arts practitioner after graduating from University of Zimbabwe. She has been on stage readings done by Almasi and also featured in film productions such as Members Class of 2023 by Bustop TV.
She is a Nama nominee in 2019 for her one hander titled Deep Down Inside directed and developed by Everson Ndlovhu.
