Karoi – In the early hours of Monday morning, suspected robbers broke into the Karoi Town Council offices in a daring heist that ended with a surprisingly small haul—just $15 in cash.
According to Mashonaland West provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Ian Kohwera, the incident occurred around 3 AM.
“We are still investigating the matter,” Kohwera said, confirming that authorities are actively following up on leads to track down the culprits.
The gang, believed to be made up of at least five masked men—one reportedly armed with a pistol—overpowered the security guards on duty.
The guards were tied up using shoelaces before the robbers proceeded to break into several council offices.
Their primary target was the licensing office, where they used explosives to force open a safe. But to their dismay, it was empty. A further search through adjacent offices yielded little, with the group ultimately escaping with only $15 in cash.
After the robbers fled, the bound guards managed to call for assistance and were eventually rescued.
The incident has sparked growing concerns about security in Hurungwe District, especially during the ongoing tobacco selling season—a time when farmers and local businesses are particularly vulnerable to criminal activity.
A similar case was reported last year in Magunje, where robbers pretending to offer farmers a lift from Harare ended up tying them up and stealing their possessions.
In light of these events, police are urging farmers and residents to remain cautious and report any suspicious behavior.
As the investigation continues, the community is left shaken and demanding better protection to prevent such crimes from becoming a troubling trend.
