Banket – Soccer fans of Banket United are buzzing with excitement as their local hero, Nqobile Magwizi, prepares for a likely victory in this weekend’s Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) presidential race.
Despite some candidates trying to exploit divisions within Banket United to undermine Magwizi‘s candidacy, the race seems largely settled in his favor. His main rival, Twine Phiri, faces an uphill battle to upset the popular front-runner, with many fans believing Magwizi is the only viable choice for the role.
For the supporters of Banket United, affectionately known as “Dzinza,” Magwizi’s rise is seen as a beacon of hope for a brighter future.
With a long-standing struggle for sponsorship, fans are optimistic that his leadership will help turn around the fortunes of local football, particularly in underfunded leagues.
“We’re confident he’ll win,” said Libby Magwenzi, a staunch supporter. “Magwizi’s victory will revive football at the grassroots level and ease the financial burden on teams like ours.
The local council, which owns the Banket United franchise, has been unable to fully support us, but we’re hopeful that will change.”
The excitement is palpable within Banket United’s ranks, as some fans who had previously been hesitant to take up leadership roles in the club are now eager to join the executive committee.
“Magwizi’s leadership has already made a difference,” said Nokuthula Mbire, a supporter. “Under his guidance, we’ve held a successful awards ceremony for our players, something we hadn’t done before. If he leads ZIFA, I’m sure the entire league will benefit.”
Magwizi received a major endorsement ahead of the election from outspoken sports administrator and trainer, Temba Mliswa, who dropped his own bid for the presidency to back him. Mliswa praised Magwizi for his integrity and vision.
“I don’t compromise on principles,” Mliswa said. “Magwizi has the right mindset, and as long as he listens and consults, he’ll do well. I’ve been asked whether I was bribed, but I have no time for that. Magwizi is the right man for the job.”
Magwizi’s only serious competition comes from Twine Phiri, Makwinji-Soma Phiri, Martin Kweza, Philemon Machana, and Marshall Gore, but the consensus among many is that the quiet and results-driven Magwizi is the best choice.
As the election draws near, all eyes are on Magwizi, with many hoping he will be the captain of a new era for Zimbabwean football.
