Harare— Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services Minister, Dr Tatenda Mavetera, has underscored the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Africa, calling for robust policy frameworks and innovation to accelerate its adoption.
In a speech read on her behalf by Deputy Minister Dingimuzi Phuti, at the African Telecommunications Union (ATU) Day Conference and Tech Expo in Harare yesterday, Dr Mavetera said AI presents an unprecedented opportunity to drive economic growth, tackle social challenges, and contribute to sustainable development.
“AI is not just a tool for technological advancement; it is a catalyst for social change. It has the potential to revolutionize agriculture, healthcare, and education, bringing tangible benefits to communities across the continent,” she said.
Dr Mavetera highlighted the critical role of policy in creating an enabling environment for AI adoption.
“As a government, we are committed to establishing clear regulations that foster innovation while safeguarding the rights of individuals and communities. This includes robust data privacy laws and ethical guidelines for responsible AI use,” she said.
The minister also emphasized the importance of investment in research and development, urging stakeholders to establish innovation hubs and forge partnerships with academic institutions. She noted that supporting tech startups and entrepreneurs through funding and mentorship programs would ensure the growth of a vibrant innovation ecosystem.
Dr Mavetera called for regional cooperation, stressing that Africa must adopt a unified approach to AI. “AI knows no borders. By collaborating across nations, we can share knowledge and resources to enhance our collective capabilities,” she said.
The minister congratulated award-winning exhibitors at the tech expo and called on all stakeholders to work together to transform Zimbabwe and Africa at large into global leaders in AI technology.
“With commitment, collaboration, and visionary leadership, we can create a legacy of prosperity and resilience for future generations,” she concluded.
