A tombstone unveiling for the legendary Afro-jazz star Jonah Mutuma is set for Bulawayo’s Westpark cemetery on 1 October 2023.
Mutuma was born on 16 February 1961 and he died on 17 November 2002. Proceedings start at 8m and then lunch at Block 1/19 Mpopoma.
Jonah Mutuma was an afro jazz artist and leader of the group Sisonke Band who previously worked with another popular afro pop group The Pied Pipers.
Mutuma produced such big hits such as Pemberai, Manyanyata, and Sisonke Mdala.
He also had a stint with Peter Mashasha Mujuru when Peter joined Sisonke Band.
In Harare Mutuma churned some jazz tunes live at Jazz 105 and Londoners for many years.
While dreadlocks are often associated with reggae musicians, it was not the case with Mutuma who donned the locks pushed backwards.
Mutuma was known for his laidback personality which he exuded on and off the stage. He was also an introvert and one who always kept things to himself.
The one good thing about Mutuma was the he could sing well in both Shona and isiNdebele.
Mutuma died a few days after he was admitted at Bulawayo Hospital.
