A Boltcutter bus driver, Christopher Mujei (52), was arrested by detectives on July 17, 2025, for smuggling a contraband of soft drinks and secondhand clothes into the country.
The arrest has sparked controversy, with bus companies operating on the South Africa-Harare and Zambia-Harare routes facing scrutiny for allegedly being major couriers of illicit goods such as alcohol and other banned substances.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the development, stating, “Police in Kadoma deployed on an operation ‘no to smuggling’ acted on received information and intercepted a Boltcutter bus registration number AGZ 0446, which was being driven by the suspect.”
During the search, police recovered 65 cases of Brother drink, 50 cases of Coca-Cola drinks, 29 cases of Captain ginger drinks, and 13 bales of new clothes.
Commissioner Nyathi added that the suspect was apprehended following the discovery of the contraband.
The government has intensified operations to address revenue leakages on import duty and levies with bus companies facing allegations of facilitating the transportation of illicit goods and assisting in the evading of normal import procedures.
