In a shocking incident that has once again highlighted the alarming state of security along Zimbabwe’s highways, veteran journalist and president of the Mining Journalists Association of Zimbabwe, Tafadzwa Dube fell victim to a brazen robbery just 200 meters away from a police station at Mbudzi intersection in Harare yesterday.
Dube, who was on his way to Harare from Bulawayo, had slowed down his vehicle at the Mbudzi intersection when his car boot was forcibly opened, and valuable broadcasting equipment worth US$1 800 stolen.
The stolen items included an editing laptop, a G3 with hard drives, memory cards, money, and a bag of clothes—essential tools for any journalist in the field. The incident is a grim reminder of the dangers that lurk on Zimbabwe’s roads, particularly at known hotspots like the Mbudzi intersection, where criminals are notorious for targeting unsuspecting motorists.
Despite the proximity to a police station, this area has become infamous for such crimes, with thieves often opening car boots or leaping into pick-up trucks to steal valuables. The recurring nature of these incidents has raised serious concerns about the effectiveness of local law enforcement.
Mr. Mubayiwa, a resident familiar with the area, expressed his frustration: “This has been happening for a long time, and it’s unacceptable that such brazen criminal activity continues unchecked so close to a police station. The authorities need to take immediate and decisive action to restore safety and confidence on our roads.”
For Tafadzwa Dube, a seasoned journalist, this incident is not just a personal loss but also a stark illustration of the broader security challenges facing many Zimbabweans. As calls for improved policing and greater vigilance grow louder, one can only hope that the authorities will finally act to address these persistent threats.
“I can no longer do my work. The equipment I lost will be difficult to replace and I am at a great loss. I urge police to do their work and help me recover the lost items.
