Utakataka Express band leader Peter Moyo has dared to be different saying he would rather learn business acumen and wisdom from Wicknell Chivayo than beg for a car.
Sir Wicknell as he is popularly known on socials has been splurging money buying expensive cars for church members, musicians and other celebrities with almost everyone jostling to have their turn to be gifted with a car.
But for young Igwe who took over the band from his father Tongai he says he needs wisdom to make money not a car.
“To Sir Wicknell Chivayo, I am not dreaming of an expensive car that will force me to live a life that I cannot afford but I dream that one day he would share his wisdom on how to make money so that we donate more to the artists.
“Those cars you gave to lucky artists also belong to me because the same artistes helped me to be where I am today and, in a way, assisted me in looking after my orphans, my siblings, my grandmother and the Utakataka Express band,” he said.
“My grandmother Mbuya Chihera uses an iPhone-14 zvaizvezvi and I am proud I gave her the phone Peter Murume waCaro
“Yes, she doesnt use WhatsApp but she is able to just send a, ‘Please Call Me Back,” he quipped.
He said Mbuya Chihera was now toothless.
“Mbuya Chihera is now toothless and her diet is mostly vegetables and usually when i send groceries to Sesombe Village where i built a nice house for her she usually asks for cabbages for her salad. When there is no cabbage she will definitely know its not from me. For her protein, we grind beef for her because she is now 92 years old as per her birth certificate though she was born during time ye mhashu, but we celebrate her birthday on 4 November.
“In Kweke there is my mother, though she had been divorced by my father but I brought her back because there no mother wants to live without her children. Yes, my relatives are not happy that she is back but if you are a child who consider that from your relatives, you will be a drunkard child, my parents comes first,” he said boldly.
Whenever Peter jokes about his life he leaves you in stitches of laughter although he wears a straight face.
One of his achievements to date was for Peter Moyo to rebuilt a house that was left behind by his father’s Kwekwe which was condemned by many of his follows as it was not worthy his fame.
Tongai dressed better than his arch rival Alick Macheso something which even his band members the likes of Ronnie Mudhindo believed drained most of his income.
On the other hand, Macheso was known for his modest dressing on stage although he drew huge crowds than Tongai.
However, Peter, has who is fast becoming his own man is known for such sobriquets as Muzukuru waChiHera, Murume waCarol, King Mswati, Shiri yeKwekwe, Mopawo Mokonzi, Chinyaride cheSungura, Muridzi WeNyaya(Music Controverse Scripter, Muzukuru waVaChihera(his father’s mother), Igwe weMicheno to mention just a few.
In the past Peter would struggle with vocal projection, charisma and lacked the guitar playing skills simply couldt not fit in his father’s shows.
But through perseverance that has since changed making him one of the most promising sungura artists of his generation.
Smart and confident, Peter is being regarded by music fans as the one of the focused artists to emerge in Zimbabwe.
in a recent interview with Photovet Takawira Dapi responded to some sensitive questions.
“Yes Mr Photoveteran, the world of Sungura is now saying I am the most intelligent artist ever been produced in Zimbabwe before and after independence because I managed to fullfill my father’s dream of building a house.
“I had passion for playing football and not music. While playing soccer i learnt a thing or two about discipline because nothing lasts forever so every chance you get in soccer counts.
“Remember, in soccer, you are ever vulnerable for insults, even to be called bad things about your innocent parents for any game mistake, people hurl insults at you and your parents.
“So I grew a thick skin when it comes to insults because insults don’t bother me but instead motivates me . Anyone who insults you they actually love you.
“Remember that time when people thought i couldn’t sing? But look where I am now musically i was not talented and it was true, but i put a lot of work into my music and investing in the band so much that now i have improved my art,” he humbly said.
Peter said while life brings a lot of pressure especially from fans he has learnt how to keep calm and focus on perfecting his craft.
