VICTORIA FALLS — For 140 years, Mercedes-Benz has been synonymous with exploration, innovation, and the spirit of adventure.
This week, that spirit brought the global luxury brand to one of the world’s most thrilling destinations — Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe.
As a 21-member international expedition team crossed the iconic Victoria Falls Bridge, they stepped into what travel experts call the “Adventure Capital of Africa”.
The convoy of new S-Class vehicles, part of the “140 Years. 140 Places” global tour, is traversing more than 50,000 kilometres across six continents and 140 locations.
A Playground for Thrill-Seekers
Known globally for its breathtaking waterfall, Victoria Falls has earned its reputation as a premier adventure tourism destination. The Zambezi River, which thunders over the falls, offers some of the most exhilarating experiences on the continent.
White-water rafting on the Zambezi’s Grade 3–5 rapids is among the world’s best, with the low-water season bringing the most intense thrills.
For those seeking an even greater rush, the Victoria Falls Bridge — the very structure the Mercedes-Benz convoy crossed — hosts a 111-metre bungee jump that plunges adventurers towards the mighty river below.
The expedition team also experienced the dramatic gorge swing, offering a freefall across the Batoka Gorge before swinging over the canyon, and ziplining at speed with panoramic views of the breathtaking landscape.
Heritage Meets Adventure
The juxtaposition of Mercedes-Benz’s 140-year legacy with Victoria Falls’ ancient heritage created a compelling narrative that resonated with Zimbabwean officials.
“What we are doing here in Victoria Falls is very significant for us in the tourism sector,” said Deputy Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry Honourable Tongai Mnangagwa during the reception ceremony at the historic Victoria Falls Hotel.
“We are receiving an iconic brand that has been around for 140 years. That shows resilience—not many companies pass a hundred years”.
The Deputy Minister emphasized the symbolic harmony between the expedition and local landmarks, noting that receiving the delegation on the Victoria Falls Bridge and hosting them at the historic hotel represents “continuity, strength, and endurance”.
A Global Platform for Zimbabwe’s Adventure Tourism
The Mercedes-Benz expedition is not merely passing through — it is generating content for a global audience of millions.
For Zimbabwe, the visibility is invaluable. The expedition showcases the awe-inspiring Victoria Falls and positions the destination as a gateway to authentic adventure experiences — from helicopter flights over the falls to river cruises where elephants, hippos, and crocodiles roam the banks.
“They have a global viewership and following across the globe,” Deputy Minister Mnangagwa said. “As they experience Zimbabwe today, they are going to show the rest of the world what Zimbabwe is all about and return home as true brand ambassadors”.
Zimbabwe Tourism Authority Chief Executive Officer Dr. George Manyaya described the visit as a “clear endorsement of our destination,” particularly significant given that Germany is currently Zimbabwe’s third-largest international tourist source market, trailing only the United States and the United Kingdom .
“From their testimonies, they genuinely loved our tourist attractions, culture, and hospitality,” Manyaya noted. “They praised our people as one of Zimbabwe’s greatest assets, which positions them to return home as true brand ambassadors”.
The Adventure Continues
Following the Victoria Falls leg, the Mercedes-Benz expedition continues its journey through Zimbabwe, showcasing the nation’s natural wonders before heading onward through Botswana and South Africa.
For adventure seekers watching from around the world, the images and stories captured in Victoria Falls will serve as an invitation to experience the thrill for themselves — whether leaping off the iconic bridge, rafting the wild rapids, or drifting quietly past a herd of elephants at sunset.
