Musician — Ishan — says he enjoys collaborating with young creatives especially those who are making waves in the likes of Gemma Griffiths, Tamy Moyo and Nutty O all of whom are featured on his upcoming EP — Bhundu Pop.
Ishan whose real name is Isheanesu Chigagura — said titling the EP Bhundu Pop was no misnomer.
“I’ve lived in the jungle for as long as I can remember. I used to herd cattle and literally lived in the bhundu,” he explained.
Critics had already labelled him a one hit wonder but this year, Ishan who dropped his EP on November 27 is climbing high on the music charts with Maidei which he often calls Peanut Butter and December.
“I have a whole bunch of young creative who are pushing the envelope the likes of Gemma and Tamy Moyo are representing the women.
“I also collaborated with Nutty O and Geezy. It is always amazing to work with people that are doing well in their own right,” he said.
On his comeback, Ishan said he has been working from the behind-the-scenes.
“Some of the tracks on the EP are from three years back Ghetto was done in 2018 while Ukandisiya was recorded in 2019,” Ishan said.
Ishan, however, said Government should recognize the arts industry so that it contributes meaningfully to the Gross Domestic Product.
“It is up to the Government to recognize the (music) industry so that it is not controlled by private players. If you look at it we have the likes of Tinashe Mutarisi who are using their platforms to expose talent and then we also have Passion Java who is putting a lot of guys on the music map. However, I do have questions in some cases where private players support the musicians is it about the artists or about these players making their own names?
“But if government chips in then there would be more artists being exposed and help grow the industry,” he said.
Ishan owned 2019 at the 19th Edition of the National Arts Merit Awards where he won Outstanding Music Video for Kure Remix, Outstanding Newcomer and Outstanding Song for Kure. He also dominated Star FM Music Awards, in the same year with Kure.
