South African singer Naledi Aphiwe has publicly apologised for a resurfaced comment just weeks before her scheduled performance in Zimbabwe.
The young artist addressed the controversy in a statement shared on social media, acknowledging fans’ concerns and expressing regret for any offence caused.
The comment in question came in response to a TikTok fan, Constance Muzenda, who asked Aphiwe to “please come to Zimbabwe.” Aphiwe replied, “Hambani niyongilinda khona,” which loosely translates to “Go wait for me there.”
While some saw the remark as casual, many Zimbabweans interpreted it as dismissive and derogatory, viewing it as a message to “go back home.”
The comment sparked outrage online, with users calling for her to be “cancelled” in Zimbabwe. Some even threatened to throw bottles at her during her scheduled performance at the Ama2k Festival in Harare in April.
In response, Aphiwe issued a formal public apology earlier this week to address the situation before her upcoming show.
“Social media never forgets, and I’ve been reminded of a comment that I made a few months ago. I want to address it properly instead of ignoring it. First, I want to make it clear that my words were never meant to disrespect Zimbabweans or come from a place of hate.”
“I understand that intentions don’t always translate well online, and I can see how what I said may have hurt or offended people. For that, I sincerely apologise,” she said.
Aphiwe added that she is still learning and growing.
“I am still young, and I’m constantly growing, learning and understanding the weight that words can carry, especially on social media. I don’t claim to be perfect, and when I make mistakes, I believe in owning them and learning from them. This has definitely been a moment of reflection for me.”
She urged the public not to judge her by a single remark.
“Please don’t misunderstand my heart or define me by one comment. It truly wasn’t that deep or rooted in negativity. I respect people from all backgrounds, and I would never intentionally spread hate.”
