A 52-year-old grandmother, Veronica Mudzipuri, has been arrested in Chegutu for allegedly killing her four-year-old granddaughter, Tawananyasha Kadhene, in a ritual murder.
According to police reports, Mudzipuri poisoned the child by lacing her maheu drink with a maize pesticide pill while they were on their way back home from a church service.
After the child died, Mudzipuri cut flesh from the victim’s cheek and lips, mixed it with herbs prescribed by a Sangoma, cooked the mixture, and ate it, believing it would bring her wealth.
The case came to light when the child’s father reported the death to the village head, who advised him to inform the police.
Upon inspecting the body, police observed open wounds on the right cheek and lip, sparking suspicions of foul play. During interrogations, Mudzipuri confessed to the crime, stating she had done it to enrich herself.
This heinous act has shocked the nation, with many expressing outrage and demanding justice. The police have urged the public to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities that may threaten the safety of children.
They also warned against the influence of unscrupulous traditional healers who may encourage such crimes for perceived economic benefits.
In a related development, the Zimbabwe Republic Police in Norton Urban are investigating two separate murder cases involving ritualistic killings.
Patrice Tinashe Chipaumire, 40, and Jack Gideon, 28, were found dead with mutilated body parts on August 25 and 26, respectively.
Police are appealing to anyone with information that can assist in the investigations to come forward.
