Kariba–In a gesture of community support, Matusadona African Parks donated a basket fridge to Kariba Prison today.
The handover ceremony was attended by various officials, including the Chief Correctional Officer, Ignatious Chihuru, who expressed heartfelt gratitude for the generous contribution.
Speaking at the event, Chihuru emphasized the significance of the donation, stating, “While this support may seem small, it will go a long way in improving the lives of those within our facility.
“Kariba is known for its heat, and this fridge will help keep perishable goods fresh, benefiting everyone, including inmates.”
He further highlighted the importance of rebranding correctional facilities, stating, “That’s why we are not just called prisons; we are the Correctional Services.”
The event was also graced by Charara Safari area manager for Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management, Mr Artwell Sibanda, as well as District Development Economist, Mrs Loacadian Chaderopa, and staff members from African Parks.
Matusadona African Parks has a history of supporting the Nyaminyami community, having initiated various programs since their operations began five years ago.
This year, they introduced a food program benefiting four schools in the Nyaminyami area, demonstrating their commitment to improving local livelihoods.
The donation of the fridge is part of Matusadona’s ongoing efforts to provide essential support to community institutions, reinforcing their role not only as a conservation organization but also as a key partner in community development.
As the ceremony concluded, attendees expressed optimism about the positive impact of the fridge on the prison community, marking another step towards enhancing conditions within correctional facilities in the region.
