Prominent sportscaster Steve Vickers – like other colleagues – has endured countless occupational hazards.
Such as being roughened up by short-tempered security men at stadiums gates, and not being able to promptly access venues due to crowd disturbances.
Nothing however quite compares to having your phone stolen, as what the well-known radio presenter experienced, to his utter horror, on Sunday.
It wasn’t however at a sporting event, where Vickers is a familiar sight, but at the Stanbic Jacaranda Music Festival on Sunday.
Vickers attended the event in his capacity as Star FM’s head of programming. He was enjoying the night out together with his lovely wife and some friends before he was left dumbfounded after the pick pockets pounced on him and made away with his Samsung handset.
Throughout the day Vickers, who was seated in the front raw facing the stage, had a splendid time taking videos and pictures.
It was there that other journalists from various media houses were gathered.
But as dusk set in, the crowd swelled towards the stage including where Vickers and his team were seated.
And just as he finished his sumptuous meal, Vickers was almost in tears.
The phone he was using to take pictures and videos was gone!
“I have lost my phone!” he exclaimed.
Vickers raised the alarm and some of the attendees who tried to track the phone failed to locate it, although the tracker showed it was around the area.
The broadcaster and his wife, Tellmore, searched everywhere including the comfortable seats. But it was a little too late.
Although the crowd that normally attends the Stanbic Jacaranda Music Festival is from the more affluent northern side of Samora Machel Ave, more often than not you would expect people to be more courteous. But that was the case this time.
That the event was held far away from the madding crowd at Thornpark Polo Club was not too deterrent for thieves to attend.
In fact, the thieves and pickpockets are now targeting such well-organised events to pounce on unsuspecting music lovers.
